Canada says it will not openly investigate allegations of Chinese election meddling

China tried to interfere in Canada’s last two elections but failed to influence their results, a senior Canadian official who is reviewing allegations of election meddling said on Tuesday (May 23). David Johnston, who is in charge of investigating the matter, has also ruled out a public inquiry following recent media reports of Chinese interference in Canada’s 2019 and 2021 elections. Opposition parties have demanded a public inquiry.
