China and the Philippines launch buoys to compete for sovereignty over the South China Sea

China and the Philippines have successively used buoys to compete for sovereignty in the South China Sea. After the Philippines recently launched navigation buoys in its claimed exclusive economic zone, China on Wednesday (May 24) deployed 3 buoys in the waters near the Nansha Islands (called the Spratly Islands in the Philippines) on the grounds of ensuring the safety of ship navigation and operations. The lamp buoy has a strong meaning of declaring sovereignty.
