Chennai: A 20-year-old student from Andhra Pradesh who was studying B.Tech in IIT-Madras committed suicide in his hostel room on Tuesday. Pushpaka Sreesai was a third year student of Electrical Engineering along with the deceased V. According to the police, Srisai is staying in the Alakananda hostel in the campus. Srisai did not come to class on Tuesday. At 11.30 am his friends reached his room looking for him.
“The door was locked from inside. After this, the students broke the door and went inside. Srisai was found there dead,” said a senior police officer. Kothurupuram police registered a case and shifted the body to Raipet Government Hospital for postmortem. Police said no suicide note was found in Srisai’s hostel room.

Meanwhile, IIT-Madras in a statement on Srisai’s death said that the atmosphere at IIT is somewhat stressful and challenging after the Covid-19 pandemic. “A standing institute internal inquiry committee including recently constituted elected student representatives will look into such incidents,” the management said. It is known that Stephen Sunny, a research scholar from Maharashtra, committed suicide in his hostel room at IIT-Madras on February 13.
