Shillong: Conrad Sangma will meet the governor on Friday to discuss government formation in Meghalaya. Official sources said that the President of the ruling NPP, Conrad Sangma, will go to the Raj Bhavan at 11.30 am on Friday and meet the Governor to explain the results of the Assembly elections.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is likely to meet Governor Phagu Chauhan on Friday morning to discuss government formation, officials said. Official sources said that the President of the ruling NPP, Conrad Sangma, will go to the Raj Bhavan at 11.30 am on Friday and meet the Governor to explain the results of the Assembly elections. It is reported that MLAs of NPP and other allied parties will also be with the governor when he meets him. A leader of the party said that they will meet the governor and explain the results to form the next government. It was revealed that Sangma will address a press conference before meeting the Governor.

Meanwhile, the National People’s Party (NPP) emerged as the largest party by winning 26 of the 59 seats in the Meghalaya Assembly elections held on February 27. However, as the party’s magic figure is less than 31 in the 60-member assembly, NPP leaders say that they will form the government with another party. NPP will form the government along with BJP. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma said that Conrad Sangma has already sought Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s support to form a new government. Conrad Sangma has already signaled that he will join the BJP, which won 3 seats. The two parties, which had been together in the past, broke up over allegations of corruption. Recently, BJP gave a letter of support to NPP.

Earlier, Meghalaya BJP chief Ernest Maury said that BJP national president JP Nadda called him to support NPP to form the government in Meghalaya. News agency ANI reported that he spoke to CM Conrad Sangma in this regard and said that he would provide a letter of support by Thursday night after consultation with the state team.

Meanwhile, the United Democratic Party (UDP), an ally of the NPP in the Sangma government, emerged as the second largest party by winning 11 seats. It won only six seats in 2018 elections. Congress won five seats and TMC led by Mamata Banerjee won five seats. The newly formed Voice of the People Party (VPP) won four seats, while the Hill State Peoples Democratic Party (HSPDP) and the Peoples Democratic Front won two seats each. Two independent candidates won.
