CHENNAI: Bomman and Belli, a tribal couple living in a remote forest, have become celebrities after the documentary ‘Elephant Whisperan’ won the prestigious Oscar award. Kartiki Gonsalves made a documentary about a couple who lovingly treat a missing elephant as a family member. It shows the relationship between the couple and the elephant. This Elephant Whisper won the Oscar in the Best Documentary Short category. The outside world came to know about Bomman and Belli playing orphaned elephants with the Oscar winning documentary. Recently Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin met the couple at the secretariat in Chennai. The Chief Minister specially congratulated them for serving the dumb creatures and gave them an incentive of one lakh rupees each. In addition, he said that Rs.9.10 crore is being allocated on behalf of the Tamil Nadu government for the construction of houses for 91 employees working for the conservation of elephants in Mudumalai, Nilgiri district. Also, CM Stalin announced that Animalai Elephant Camp will be developed with a cost of Rs.5 crores.
