It is known that Sunrisers Eastern Cape, which has invested in Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL, has won the recently concluded SA T20 League trophy in South Africa. Eastern Cape was led by South African all-rounder Aiden Markrum. After winning this trophy, Markrum also got the captaincy of Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL. Now Markrum.. will also lead the South African cricket team.
The South African Cricket Board announced the appointment of Markram as the captain in the T20 format. The team left out Temba Bavuma, who has taken care of the ODI and T20 captaincy for many years, and handed over the reins to Markram.
Markrum will take the reins as the captain from the T20 series against West Indies at home. When Dean Elgar stepped down from the Test captaincy, the South African board, which continued Bavuma as the captain in Tests as well as ODIs, handed over the T20 reins to Markram. Despite the presence of David Miller in the team, Markrum’s handing over the reins of captaincy surprised the South African fans, but after seeing the performance of the Eastern Cape captain in the SA20, the South African Cricket Board changed its mind.
Former South African player JP Duminy has been selected as the batting coach of the team. Rory Kleinveld is going to be the bowling coach. Meanwhile, there are reports that the former captain of the team, Faf Duplessis, will join the team again in the upcoming T20 series with West Indies. But the South African board did not show much interest in Duplessis’ inclusion. Head coach Rob Walter’s talks with Duplessis have reportedly failed.
South Africa, which is currently playing a Test series with the West Indies, will play the second Test from the 8th of this month. It is known that South Africa won the first test. The three ODI series will start from March 16. Three T20s will be held on March 25, 26 and 28.
